Georgia has also begun collecting the sales tax for internet commerce. They
went after Amazon first and are working their way through a list of the
larger internet companies. Interestingly, I bought a set of tires from
Discount Tire (phone order after finding what I wanted on their website).
Via the phone call, they gave an discount, free shipping, and didn't charge
tax, even though they have retail stores in Georgia, including one about 40
miles from my house. Go figure.

Ted, you are correct. Most state's have a provision that if your car is
towed, trailered or otherwise shipped into the state, and IF the business
knows their stuff, your vehicle will not be charged Sales Tax. Given a
significant ticket amount, you could save half or more of your shipping
costs. We have many customers who come from Nashville area where tax is 9
1/2%. If they tow it or trailer it, they are tax free.
But I'm not sure about Calif now. I escaped from there 10 years ago. I
notice they make all commerce collect sales tax on all goods over the
internet along with NJ.

Interesting tax ramifications on driving the car there vrs. shipping. Drive
it there, pay that state's tax. Ship it, you don't. Because, ahem, of
course you will declare and pay YOUR states tax, right? :-)
