Thanks for all the help, but before I get even more email telling me to adjust the switch:
The switch is SHOT. Finis! Deceased! Dead! ¡Muerta! Guasto! Tot! Mort! Inoperante! It is properly adjusted, the problem is the contacts are worn/corroded/whatever; otherwise the switch would shut off when I push it in manually. Sometimes the switch will work, sometimes it will not.
After pouring a bunch of clear water over it, worked the switch a ton of times manually, then let it sit, I put the fuse back in and sure enough the light shut off, but now it's working the way it was before (inconsistently); sometimes the light will come on when I open the door, other times the light might not come on at all unless I work the switch a few times manually, including pushing it to one side then to the other.
The problem is not adjustment; the problem is that the switch is failing, but thank you all very, very much for the tips. :-) I perhaps should have posted more details about the symptoms when I posted a message asking for a source for the switches.
